As a web developer here at Dingle I go through dozens of projects a year. Sometimes the projects require a completely unique implementation and sometimes all that is required is giving an existing application a small facelift. The range of project types is vast, so it’s a good idea to take a few moments to consider which approach to use before jumping in to the project.

When I’m going through the specs for a new project, there are two mantras that I really try to live by and keep thinking about throughout the whole workday

TITS and BUTTS.

TITS

“Think It Through, Silly!” Now TITS is something that will really improve your efficiency in projects. Imagine what the final product should be like, and try to really milk out any possible considerations that have not been specified for the project. Make a roadmap or bullet point style plan for what needs to be done for the project to achieve a working final project. By going through the project in advance and thinking through the execution, you can recognize possible bumps on the road and avoid them before your project suffers from them.

Bumpy road sign
If you are aware of bumps in your development path, you can avoid them before even starting the project

BUTTS

If you want to be smart about your project, you should remember to “Build Upon Time-tested Solutions.” Sometimes, in the heat of the moment, I get lost in my own code. Maybe I was coding too intensely, or I ran into an issue I hadn’t expected (not enough TITS). Maybe I’ve just been working on the problem for so long that I can’t see the obvious solution. When using a development process that is BUTTS driven, you can take advantage of code that other (most likely smarter—or at least a group that is collectively smarter) programmers have produced. Relying on solutions that have been developed by professionals and have been proved to work will save you time and effort while rising your code’s quality. BUTTS will keep you from producing shit.

Scream it out loud. TITS and BUTTS!

I hope I’ve been able to convince you that TITS and BUTTS are wonderful things. I believe they really improve any project, and I will be embracing TITS and BUTTS whenever I get a chance. The great thing about these two approaches is their exportability. A TITS and BUTTS attitude can be taken with any kind of task at hand; it’s not just limited to development.
